                                                                    Picture
This handsome man recently retired from a very successful career on the track and with such an amazing tempermant, his owners felt that he deserved to move on as someone's pleasure horse.
Possie is an 11yo bay STB who stands at approximately 14.2h with a lovely quiet nature.
We took Possie to the roundyard the week he arrived and had a play with him to get to know him a little better. He was so nice and quiet that Lynda took a few extra steps to check out exactly how quiet he really is.
Although Possie seems to have an incredible tempermant, we will first need to have the Veterinarian come out and assess him before we can begin his training. After many years of hard racing Possie has got some lumps and bumps on his legs that need to be x-rayed to make sure he is not too sore to go on as a pleasure mount. He will also get a chiropractic session to loosen up some of the sore spots from pulling the carts, along with dental  and overall health check.

                                                                    Possie Get's A Doctor's Visit - 8 March, 2010

Our Veterinarian, Dr Tony Hanegraaf, came out and went over both our newcomers last week. Possie was given a little something to relax him before Tony had a close look at his teeth which were in bad shape.

                                                                    Picture
Possie had deep lacerations inside his mouth from razor sharp edges on his teeth.

Tony Gave Possie a chiropractic session and it was great to see Possie looking so relaxed after some stretching and flexing.
Possie will now have a couple of weeks off to relax and recover. He will be given penicillen injections twice a day to prevent any infections in his mouth and allow the sores to heal.  Tony will be back for a follow up visit and to take x-rays of Possie's front legs.

A Follow Up Visit From The Vet - 13 March, 2010

Tony came back for a follow up with Possie and first thing on the list was taking x-rays of Possie's legs with all the lumps and bumps. Tony set up a make shift x-ray lab in our garage and got to work.
What a suprise we all got when the x-rays showed up without a trace of permanent damage !
Most suprised of all was probably Tony himself, who had looked carefully at the uneven front legs and shook his head while dreading the worst. Well, thankfully the x-rays told a happier story, there was no trace of any chips, splints or arththritic changes to any of the lower joints or the front knees....Possie not only has a heart of gold but he has legs of steel.
Next on the list was a second Chiro session to loosen up the last of any stiff joints. Tony was very pleased at how much Possie had already improved since the first session and said he should feel like a new horse after this week.
Tony also checked that Possie's ulcers had gone and the mouth had healed completely, again it was only good news. Tony's assistant took Possies temperature and listended to his lungs as a final check and to our delight, Possie was given the "all clear".
                                                                    Picture

Possie The Riding Horse - 31 March, 2010

In the last few weeks we have slowly been starting Possie's education as a riding horse. Possie continues to demonstrate an unflappable nature and is a wonderful student to work with.
Possie has already been out on three trail rides and has been perfectly behaved all the way, if anything, you could say he's a bit on the lazy side.
Yesterday afternoon Lynda did some work with Possie in the paddock to re-inforece the leg aids and introduce him to new things like trotting poles.

Possie Has Been Adopted - 18 May, 2010

With a lovely tempermant under saddle, Possie is every bit as sweet as he is to handle on the ground. Not surprisingly he found a new home quickly as he was a perfect match to a lady, also by the name "Linda" (but spelt differently). Linda is returning to riding and wanted a quiet horse she could lead her young daughter's pony from.  We went out to visit Possie at his new home and found him amongst his new mates in a huge paddock that backs on to a forest where they all play 'chasies' between the trees. Below is Possie with his new Mum 'Linda'...
The only problem Linda has in riding Possie...is getting to him first. Her beautiful little daughter also adores Possie and although she has her own pony, she too enjoys riding Possie...
More often than not we are lucky enough to become friends with the wonderful people we meet through the re-homing of the horses that come into our care. We know that we will continue to keep in touch with Possie and his new family and will keep our readers posted on their progress together.
