Gumby's Page
As a general rule, Epona's Pastures tries not to take ponies into our care. This is simply because we don't really have the fencing, nor pony size training equipment to work with them safely and effectively.
Little Gumby was a special request and we were asked to pick him up from the knackery yards so that he could be a companion pony for a little miniature. With the understanding that he already had a home to go to, we were happy to assist. Unfortunately the home he was going to has had a change of heart at the last minute and through no fault of his own, Gumby now finds himself homeless once again.
We started introducing Gumby to our readers on Dino's page, but as Gumby has now become an EP rescue horse he deserves his own page where he can tell his story.
Gumby has made very good friends with little Kate while he has been here and we love seeing the two of them together whenever Kate comes to visit.

Gumby also had two wolf teeth that Shannon adviced were best to extract as they are not useful for anything and may cause problems later in life. Gumby was given full nerve blocks in addition to an overall sedation to have the teeth removed and it was done with no pain and no fuss.
Gumby Learns To Give To Pressure - 27 September, 2010
Horses and ponies are usually taught to yield to pressure from a very young age. This training should start in the first couple of months of a foal's life when a halter is put on and the foal is taught to lead. A foal should also be taught to 'tie up' safely so that they don't panic when pressure is applied to the pole of the head with the headstall. If done properly at a young age, most horses will stand happily when tied up and lead knowing that they can't pull away from the person holding the rope.
Little Gumby has not had proper training as a foal and now that he is fully grown it can be a difficult situation when he does not know to give to pressure but follows his instincts to pull away instead.
Charlie and his brother John have assisted in providing Gumby with his first proper "Tying Up" lesson. As Gumby is now fully grown he is strong enough to hurt himself if tied to something solid so the boys play the role of a 'tying up pole' while being able to control the release of pressure at a moments notice when required. At first Charlie tried to work with Gumby on his own but Gumby followed his instincts and tried to pull away from any pressure and although only small he has some strength in him.

Charlie then employed the assitance of his brother John and it became a different story..
Although Gumby continued to follow his instincts for a little while, he soon realised that the correct response is to give to the pressure and within minutes he was following the boys around like a lamb...
Lots of praise and pats are given to reward correct behaviour and Gumby is by nature a very sweet and inquisitive pony who wants to please and responded well to the training.

Gumby Has Found His For-ever Home - 19 February, 2011
A couple of months ago we were contacted by a lovely lady who was looking at Gumby on our website and thought he might be suitable for her to have as her own project pony and eventually to be used as their kids riding pony. Rebecca brought the family with her to meet Gumby and it was love at first sight. Gumby went out on trial to see if he would settle in to the new enviornment and if he would be suitable for what Rebecca was looking for. We only heard the most positive feedback from Rebecca and recently we made the journey out to see how they were getting along.
Let us beging by saying "Wow, what a handsome pony Gumby has grown into!"
.....and what a completely dedicated pony he has become to his new Mom !!
We also had Gumby's friend little "Kate" (see first photos of Gumby's rescue above) come to visit along with Gumby's Godmother "Linda". Kate also got to play with Gumby's new paddock companion "Opel".
Gumby's story has touched everyone that had the pleasure of meeting him on his journey. He is such a loving and brave little pony who has now found his trust in people again. We will never know what hardships Gumby faced before we plucked him out from deaths row, but we do know that he is one lucky little pony who will be much loved by Rebecca and her three children for the rest of his life.
